Importance Of Cognitive/Psychological skills for students

Everybody think all the time and talk about the thinking as well. What does it mean to think? Thinking Or Cognition, can be defined as a mental activity that goes on in the brain when a person is organizing the information, trying to understand the information and communicating it to others. When people think, they not only think about the information but simultaneously make decisions, compare it with other information and use it to solve the problems. All these abilities i.e. thinking  , reading , learning, remembering, organizing, are crucial for every organised human action. These mental abilities are known as Cognitive skills, which are crucial to carry out any task from simplest to the most complex. These cognitive and psychological   skills play an important role in the holistic development of an individual. The cognitive skills identify how you best learn and grasp the information. The capabilities through which you efficiently understand new information and recall the previous learned information decide individual’s efficient cognitive skills.
                A good understanding of an individual’s cognitive skills and strength is the key factor in Learning. Cognitive skill development in a child occurs rapidly in the few years of his/her life and build on them progressively throughout his/her grade school. Cognitive skill development involves the development and progress of learning skills such as attention, Memory and thinking. With the help of these skills, a child learn to analyse, divide, remember etc. The speed of the development and progress of a child can be differ, from his/her peers. Many students adopt cognitive skills more rapidly or very slowly as compare to their classmates. There is an important role of Parents and Teachers in the development of a child.
At this age of Speed and rapid progress, children too can’t escape from excessive competition. At this crucial point, teachers and parents are expected to understand the individual’s pace and capabilities. Teachers and parents should understand that, no two individuals can progress and can develop with the same speed. A child may take some more time to adopt some cognitive skills or may adopt some of them rapidly. Although some cognitive skills are innate, most of them can be learned and improved with the practice and right guidance.
At the teacher’s part, the teacher should be creative and innovative for the development of cognitive skills of students. For example, one of the important Cognitive skills, i.e. Attention can be developed in children through various creative ways. The teacher can arrange various mind games, such as Puzzles, asking the differences between two pictures, showing some videos and asking them the little details in the shown videos etc. Teacher can also arrange study tours or visits to science centres or exhibitions to stimulate thinking and can ask varied questions which would definitely help students to increase their attention. Such activities would also help to develop another important cognitive skills such as Logic and Reasoning. Parents can also assign some mental tasks to children to develop their attention and Concentration.
Memory is the most important cognitive skills which enables a child to remember, recall what he/she has learned or experienced. Teacher can help students to memorise any content by using audio-video Aids. By teaching any content with rhyme, songs and music , helps students to remember and memories the content more effectively.
Thinking , which is an extremely important cognitive skill enables an individual to make decisions, accomplishing the tasks , solving the problems and finding the solutions. Telling the stories and asking the questions, arranging mind games, exercises for vocabulary building etc. are some of the ways through which a teacher can help students to encourage thought processes of the students. Parents can also ask questions about the possibilities, dilemmas, to stimulate their thinking process.
All the cognitive abilities can be develop in children with some efforts, patience and dedication by parents as well as teachers. The cognitive skills would definitely help an individual for his/her holistic development.
